I love to wear makeup but I wish removing makeup was just as fun, especially stubborn, waterproof eye makeup. The tedium of makeup removing process is what deters some of my friends from wearing makeup every day. For some of us who are diligent are also on the lookout for an efficient, mess-free makeup remover. In the past, I have tried micellar waters by Garnier and Estee Lauder, and this is the first time I am trying and reviewing one from a Korean brand.
Product Description:
The no-wash cleansing water gently yet effectively cleanses away Lip and Eye and Face makeup by selectively absorbing only makeup impurities from skin upon contact with the monstrous cleansing of Micelle.

My Experience with Etude House Monster Micellar Cleansing Water:
I usually use makeup remover wipes to remove my face makeup and for eyes, I have used various kinds of makeup removers such as micellar water by brands like The Body Shop and Estee Lauder, but since they all failed me at some level or the other, I decided to keep hunting for a better one. I have never tried one by a Korean brand before, so decided to add one to my Korean makeup haul.
The product comes in a clear, plastic bottle with a white cap on top. Packaging is a big let-down because the opening dispenses a lot of product at a time and causes a lot of spillage. I wish it had a smaller opening or a spray nozzle or something to prevent product wastage.
The consistency of the product is like micellar water – water-based medium with oil floating on top. The bottle has to be shaken well to evenly distribute the product and then applied to eyes using a cotton pad. Let the soaked cotton pad sit on lids for a few seconds to break down the waterproof makeup and then wipe it off. I used it the same way and tried to remove my eyeliner and mascara, but unfortunately, the results were not satisfactory.
I had hoped to get squeaky clean waterline and lashes, but I guess that was a wishful thinking. This micellar water did remove makeup, but it requires some tugging and pulling on my lids and my lips. I had to do that because it leaves my eyes and lips a little bruised and the painful sensation stays for a while.
Also, another let down was that although it claims to be a gentle makeup remover, it does sting my eyes if I try to clean my waterline and makes my eyes watery. I think calling it “gentle” eye makeup remover is a dishonest advertisement and they should mention in the description that it should not be used on the waterline.
Pros of Etude House Monster Micellar Cleansing Water:
- Comes in a leak-proof bottle.
- Easily available online or in Ulta stores.
- Quantity would last a while.
- Formulation is like that of micellar water and oils in it help break down the waterproof makeup.
Cons of Etude House Monster Micellar Cleansing Water:
- Stings eyes if used to remove mascara or eyeliner on the waterline and certainly not gentle.
- Not efficient at removing makeup as it advertises. It does require some rubbing and tugging.
- The bottle opening causes a lot of spillage and wastage of product.
- Does not remove makeup that well as it claims, does leave mascara goop behind.
This product failed to impress me but I guess I should not expect a lot from micellar waters. They do remove makeup but I prefer cleansing balms. I recommend it to those who have better experience with micellar water and do not wear heavy eye makeup.
