Hey gorgeous gals,
I did promise you umpteen lipstick reviews and so, here it goes! Today’s review is on a lipstick from the luxe brand “Burberry.” It is one of their iconic shades and because it’s so iconic – they have the shade available across their different formulas. Rati reviewed this shade in the “Lip Cover” formula, while Neetu reviewed the shade in Burberry’s “Full Kisses” formula. I will be reviewing the same shade in their “Lip Velvet” range! This leaves the shade in Burberry’s Liquid Lip velvet range up for grabs! Any takers?? ☺
I understand why brands do this – you may love a shade but not like a particular formula. When brands make the shade in various formulas, it allows you to pick the shade in the formula you want, but it can be super bumming if as a customer you did not know that the shade is available in various formulas. You may just ask for the shade and end up getting it in a texture which doesn’t really work for you. Anyway. Let us look at the glass half empty!

My Experience with Burberry Lip Velvet Lipstick 437 Oxblood:
Packaging: Burberry lipstick packaging consists of a square grey tube with the Burberry trademark trench design on it – extremely difficult to photograph – it’s so dark. The lipstick case has a magnetic closure, so the lipstick will not open in your bag accidentally. The shade name and number is written on the bottom – very difficult to read, though. There is no colour indicator. I love the fact that it does not attract any fingerprints. The lipstick bullet has the same trench design on it, which is quite appealing and drives home the feel of a luxe product. Yes, nowadays drugstore brands also have imprints on their bullets – and yet – this still looks more luxe!
Shade: The shade, Oxblood, has been described by the brand as a deep burgundy color. The description is more apt than the shade name actually. For clarity, “Burgundy” is a region in France known for their excellent red wines, named after the region. The colour of this lipstick is the shade “Burgundy.” So, it is a deep red with hints of plum in it and a satin finish. It doesn’t really look like an oxblood shade. Oxblood to me would have been the deep maroon red which is generally sported by Deepika Padukone. This shade is a tad more complex due to the hint of plum in it. Being a deep shade, it isn’t something you slap on and walk out of the door. It needs attention and conversely – gets you attention. It should work for all skin tones.
Texture: I have wanted to try the Burberry Lip Velvet range since ages – this is Burberry’s matte collection. However, upon application, to me, it seems more semi-matte than a full-on matte. The formula is extremely lightweight and glides smoothly. Even if you layer, it doesn’t feel cakey or heavy. The product adheres wells to the lips. Once applied, it doesn’t slip around. The satin smoothness does not get drying over time. There is no feeling that the product is clingy. It keeps the lips comfortable. It is not kiss-proof but there is very minimal transference.
Pigmentation: Pigmentation is good but not fully opaque in a single swipe – you need to build it over a couple of strokes. The good thing is that the shade applies with an even distribution of pigment. When a shade is this deep – there can be issues with it applying patchy – but this is not the case with Burberry’s Lip Velvet in Oxblood.
Lasting Power: The lipstick gives you about 7-7.5 hours of wear, post which it can start thinning out, especially from the middle portion of my lower lip. It does leave a bit of a stain but it isn’t something which would give appearance of the actual colour still being there. As the lipstick start to wear off, it does so evenly, without getting or looking patchy.
Fragrance: There is a faint fragrance. It is pleasant to the nose. I did not feel it while application, but only when I put my nose to it!
To sum this up for you:

IMBB Rating:

The brand promised “a comfortable, non-drying, soft-matte lipstick with a lasting, velvety finish,” and delivered on it. I like it when the brands keep it real and not come up with absurd claims or make way more promises than a product can hope to deliver. I liked the formula, especially considering how comfortable the matte product is.
