Regina King & Uzo Aduba’s Breonna Taylor Tees Are The Only Emmys Looks That Mattered
It’s not a new concept for celebrities to add a political statement to their red carpet looks, but Regina King and Uzo Aduba’s Breonna Taylor shirts at the Emmys this year might have been one of the most important outfits we’ve seen yet. Whenever stars use their platform lift up the voiceless, they instantly end up on my best-dressed list—and this particular look from Emmy-winners Regina King and Uzo Aduba definitely made it. Though all of our favorite stars accepted their awards virtually at the 2020 Emmys, they still had a larger audience than most of us ever will. What they do with that audience is just as important at home as it is on an actual red carpet.
Thankfully, Regina King and Uzo Aduba understood the importance of using their platforms—even if it was during a virtual awards show. In addition to her gorgeous hot pink blazer (a look!), King wore a Breonna Taylor t-shirt featuring Taylor’s face and “Say her name” emblazoned on the front. Aduba wore a t-shirt that simply said “Breonna Taylor” on it. Regina King and Uzo Aduba reminded us all tonight that Taylor still deserves justice by using their Emmys ensembles (and wins!).
After Breonna Taylor’s death at the hands of three cops in March 2020, a worldwide fight for justice (or, as much justice can be received after a tragic death) started. So many folks—including celebrities—have posted photos and pleas on social media for the officers who shot an unarmed Breonna Taylor to be convicted, but so far none have been arrested.
For those who want to help (and don’t have the same celebrity status to spread the word like King and Aduba), you can donate to the Justice for Breonna Taylor GoFundMe and sign the petition to arrest the cops who killed Taylor. There’s also a Justice for Breonna Taylor website where you can get more information about where, exactly, things stand with her case and the fight for justice.
Though the battle for Breonna Taylor continues, I’m glad we have celebrities like Regina King and Uzo Aduba who use their platforms for good. I love a good red carpet ensemble as much as the next person—but sometimes, making a statement is the most gorgeous look of all.
