The United States of America boasts an impressive 62 national parks that attract millions of visitors every year. To experience nature at its best, more than 327 million people from around the world visited the parks in 2019. These treasured landscapes are managed by the National Park Service (NPS), which is celebrating its 104th birthday on August 25. Big Bend National Park, Texas
The Big Bend National Park, in western Texas, is one of the most remote national parks in the USA. Comprising of 1,252 square miles of land, it offers abundant outdoor activities and endless possibilities for adventure.
Big Bend is known for its temple-like canyons and to see them up close, you can take a scenic drive through the paved roads or take a day hike through the more than 140 miles of hiking trails. The park is also considered to be one of the best places to look up and stargaze. On the clearest nights, you can see over 2,000 stars with the naked eye.
Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Situated in southern Oregon, Crater Lake National Park is well-known for being home to the deepest lake in the U.S. and the seventh deepest lake in the world. Crater Lake (1,943 feet deep) was created 7,700 years ago, when a violent eruption triggered the collapse of the 12,000-foot-high Mount Mazama. The lake is filled almost entirely by snowfall making it one of the clearest lakes in the world.
Comprising of 183,224 acres of mountains, peaks and evergreen forests, Crater Lake National Park provides numerous opportunities to visitors who can swim, snowshoe, ski, hike and cycle through the mountainous terrain.
Acadia National Park, Maine
Located on Mount Desert Island off the coast of Maine, Acadia National Park encompasses over 47,000 acres of land and has no shortage of summits, hiking trails and natural beauty. A convenient way to take a quick tour of Acadia is by riding along the 27-mile Park Loop Road. Some of the highlights of the road include Schooner Head, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the North Atlantic seaboard, for enchanting views of the park.
Arches National Park, Utah
Arches National Park in Moab, Utah offers the largest concentration of natural arches in the world. It is home to more than 2,000 stunning arches that have been shaped by years of wind and rain. The most famous natural stone arch is the Delicate Arch. It has become iconic due to its freestanding shape and is one of the most photographed arches in the park. From biking, hiking, and horseback riding, to a gorgeous scenic drive through the park, Arches has plenty to keep you busy during your visit.
Denali National Park, Alaska
Alaska’s most well-known national park, Denali is an outdoor wonderland as it offers wide-open spaces, beautiful mountain vistas and abundant wildlife. Most visitors come to the park to see the tallest peak in North America, 20,310 feet tall Mount Denali. The park is also one of the best places in the U.S. to watch the Aurora Borealis.
Denali also offers opportunities to witness amazing wildlife such as moose, grizzly bears, wolves and bald eagles. The park was established in 1917 as Mount McKinley National Park and renamed Denali National Park in 1980.
