10 WARNING SIGNS YOU’RE LONELY – EVEN IF YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT
10 Warning Signs You’re Lonely – Even If You Don’t Feel Like It
There’s a cure for many things these days, but it’s really hard to cure loneliness.
A lot of the time, loneliness just creeps up on us without warning. Before we realise it, we don’t have a close friend anymore, there’s no one to reach out to … and we really do feel incredibly closed off from the world.
Loneliness can be a mental health hazard. It’s a disease that wraps around us, torments us and makes us feel bad. Not just this, but its effects can also be physical. As such, once you’ve identified that you truly are lonely, it’s time to seek help and reach out to others.
If you’re not sure that you’re lonely, let’s take a look at these…
10 Of the warning signs that you light be lonely
You Don’t Sleep A Lot
Of course, there are many reasons for why someone isn’t sleeping well. Stress, anxiety, insomnia and so on are all causes.
But when combined with other signs that we’ll explore below, a lack of proper sleep could be a clear sign that you’re lonely.
Loneliness is often worse at night time. It feels sharper because we’re left alone with our thoughts for the night. While others are cuddling up to their loved ones, we’re by ourselves again. Bad thoughts can set in, and these thoughts can often prevent us from getting the sleep we need.
Moreover, it’s common for lonely people to stay up late at night because there’s no one telling them that it’s time for bed. With no one to share our bedtime with, we may end up staying up longer than is healthy.
You Attach A Lot of Importance to Material Things
When our lives are empty, we might attempt to fill the emptiness up with material things.
This was the conclusion of one study that found a link between loneliness and materialism. The conclusion was that, the lonelier we are, the more money we’ll spend on material things. As though they’ll fill up a space in our lives.
Take a look at your spending habits. Do you spend more than your friends? Are you addicted to online and offline shopping?
Ask yourself what kind of shopper you are, too. Are you an emotional shopper who goes on sprees whenever you feel down?
Without someone to share our life with, the temptation can often be to fill it with things instead.
You Binge Watch a Lot of TV Shows
How many TV shows have you got through this year? If you literally can’t recall, it could be a sign that you’re lonely.
When we’re lonely, TV shows become almost like friends. They’re there for us whenever we want, and we quickly get hooked on them.
Moreover, they act as a good distraction to our isolation.
You Take a Lot of Hot Baths
This is something you can might do subconsciously. Nobody who is lonely consciously decides to replace an emotional and physical space in their lives with a hot bath or shower. But according to studies, lonely people for sure do this without realising it.
The theory is that, when we’re not getting the right amount of social warmth from others, we unconsciously replace it with warmth from hot showers and baths.
It might sound odd, but consider your own routine. Do you take a lot of long, hot baths? If so, it could be a sign that you’re longing for more social warmth.
You Think You Might Be Depressed
Depression isn’t something you should self-diagnose. But if you think you might be depressed, loneliness could be the root cause.
Your Closest Friends Are Lonely
Take a good look at the friends you’ve been hanging out with/talking to the most recently. Are they happy with their life? Are they positive and outgoing?
Or are they isolated and lonely? Have they told you they feel down and unhappy?
When we feel lonely, it’s natural to gravitate towards others who are lonely. It’s the same when we feel anything strongly. The more positive we are, the more we will find comfort with those who are equally positive.
Most of Your Friends Are Online Ones
Even if your closest friends aren’t lonely, if they’re online-based, it’s a strong sign that you’re lonely.
While it’s satisfying to have friends we can turn to no matter whether they’re online or offline, when most of our friends are online it suggests that we’ve isolated ourselves from the real world. Nowadays, we spend most of our time catching up with people online and a lot less time hanging out with a coffee or a beer.
And this can be damaging to our already growing isolation.
You Blow Things Out of Proportion
Have you been greatly exaggerating things recently? For example, perhaps you’ve worried that a tiny bump could be cancer, or that the fact a crush hasn’t texted back for 2 hours means it’s all over.
When we obsess over things like this, it strongly suggests it’s because we haven’t got much else going on in our lives. We’re alone with our thoughts, and this is when we begin to blow things out of proportion.
You’ve Put On Weight
Weighing more than we’d like doesn’t automatically mean it’s because we’re lonely, of course. But weight gain, when combined with some or all of the above points, can indicate loneliness.
This can be for a number of reasons. One of them is that isolation reduces our motivation to take care of ourselves, while another is that eating offers comfort when we’re feeling lonely and vulnerable.
You Get Sick A Lot
If you’ve noticed that you seem to be getting sicker than you ever used to get, it could mean that your nervous system is really feeling the effects of loneliness.
Loneliness makes us stressed. As you know, stress causes the body to do some strange things. Hormones are disrupted, our immune system is weakened – and we get sick. A lot.
