Today’s review is about Philips Lumea Prestige IPL Hair removal device BRI 950. Hair removal is a very necessary and time consuming part in every lady’s life. I wanted to have a better solution compared to shaving and epilating. I have tried all methods and now wanted to give IPL a try. I went for home device and not salon one due to the costs. Yes, home kit like Philips is also quite expensive but I thought it will last a long time and I can use it any time and any day as per my needs. Here is my honest opinion about it.

Product Description:

Expert IPL technology at home, developed with dermatologists
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Philips Lumea applies gentle pulses of light to the hair root, putting the follicle into a resting phase. As a consequence, the amount of hair your body grows gradually decreases. Repeating the treatment leaves your skin beautifully hair free and touchably smooth. Treatment to prevent hair regrowth is safe and gentle, even on sensitive areas. Philips Lumea is clinically tested and developed with dermatologists for easy and effective treatment, from the comfort of your own home.

Proven safe and effective treatment
Objective studies show up to 92% hair reduction in as little as 3 treatments**. The first 4 treatments must be carried out every 2 weeks, after which you should already be able to see the desired results. To maintain your results, simply touch up every 4 weeks. After just 8 touch-up treatments you can be hair-free for 6 months* To enlarge this picture, please click on the image in the image gallery at the top of this page.
Suitable for a wide variety of hair and skin types
Philips Lumea Prestige works effectively, easily and safely on a wide variety of hair and skin types. It works on naturally dark blonde, brown and black hair and on skin tones from very white to dark brown. As with other IPL-based treatments, Philips Lumea cannot be used to treat white/grey, light blonde or red hair and is not suitable for very dark skin. This is due to the high contrast required between the pigment in the hair colour and the pigment in the skin tone.
Intelligent attachments adapt the treatment of each area
Your hair and your curves vary across your body, so each area needs treating in a different way to ensure the best results. Philips Lumea Prestige has uniquely curved intelligent attachments for the body (legs, arms, stomach) and face (upper lip, chin). Each intelligent attachment differs by combinations of shape, window size and filter, and triggers a tailored treatment programme for specific body part when added to the device. This mix of considered design and bespoke treatment enables effective and safe treatment even on delicate or sensitive areas.
Precise face attachment with extra filter
To gently but effectively treat hair on your face, the attachment has been carefully designed with a small, 2 cm2 window that’s also flat for precise use on the upper lip, chin or jawline. It has an extra integrated filter and when added to the device the intelligent attachment will automatically adjust the light treatment for your face. 84% of women satisfied with hair reduction on face***.
Large body attachment with curved-in design
The body attachment has our largest treatment window (4.1 cm2) so it’s perfect for a fast treatment on large body areas like legs, arms and stomach. The curved-in design closely follows body contours for optimal skin contact. When added to the device this intelligent attachment automatically triggers a tailored treatment suitable for these body areas. 83% of women satisfied with hair reduction on legs***.
With SmartSkin sensor
Philips Lumea Prestige has 5 energy settings and makes it easy for you to choose the right one thanks to the SmartSkin sensor. The SmartSkin sensor advises the best setting for your skin tone, any time you want.
Use either cordless or corded
Philips Lumea Prestige can be used both cordless and corded. For big areas like legs, we recommend using the device corded for a faster treatment without interruption. When treating smaller or hard to reach areas like the face, underarms or bikini area, use the device cordless so you can enjoy full freedom of movement.
No replacement parts, no hidden costs
Philips Lumea is a complete solution that comes ready to work, straight out of the box. No refill cartridges or gels needed.

My Experience with Philips Lumea Prestige IPL Hair removal device BRI 950:
The product comes in a cardboard packaging with all details written on it. Inside the cardboard comes the device itself, the charger and also a pouch. They claim the pouch to be a luxury one but it is no where close to it.

The device is rose gold and white it colour and looks quite beautiful. It does look quite bulky but it is not so heavy. It can easily be held for long duration without tired hands or arms. The handle is quite sturdy and provides a fine grip. The product has 2 attachments. One for face and one for rest of the body. This IPL can be used on arms, legs, stomach, chin, upper jaw, jawline, underarms and bikini.

There is a power button on the head of the device along with a scanning button and 5 levels of energy indicators. The 5 levels indicate what level of energy is required to remove the hair. The device automatically detects the skin tone and sets itself to the right setting. This is a good feature but if used wrongly, the skin can get burned and also results in scars. The device can be used with the charging chord or without too which is also a good feature. The device has 2 years warranty.

This is how I used it. You are recommended to use it on a clean skin without any kind of products. So, I used it on freshly washed skin. My main intension was to remove facial hair.
I used the first time on my hands to feel the intensity. The machine detected that I need energy level 1. The flashes of light do feel like an elastic band strike. It is not painful and totally bearable. I have dusky skin tone and as per the reference skin colour chart, it is supposed to work on my skin colour. But on my arms, there were certain sections of skin where the device just did not omit light even when I pressed the button. There were sections where it worked well. I used it on completely shaved skin. There were few hairs here and there which were not shaven and I could smell the burnt hair. The whole room was smelling so make sure to shave completely.

I am quite skinny and the areas where the window was not completely covered by my skin, the light flashes did not happen. I had to struggle a lot to cover my skinny hands. I really was frustrated in the whole process. One more thing, you are not supposed to treat the same area more than once! With this, I could not try all angles to attack and cover all my skin. On my leg, I had similar experience. I had a very difficult time to make the device work on my skin. Also, it worked slightly better when used during daylight than artificial light. But, it is impractical to remove hair keeping the windows open

I was even more frustrated when I used it on my face. I switched to the face attachment which is a smaller window and also has an extra filter. My face is much lighter than rest of the body and the light intensity selected was 3 and some times 4. It also worked well on the jaws. My face is also skinny and so as I came down to my bony jaw lines, it just did not work as the area was not getting covered in the window.

Upper lip is one area where all women need help. But, it just didn’t flash light near the cupid bow. So, it means that I have to go back and shave the unattended areas. To top it all, it made me feel that my skin tone is not suitable for the device and in spite of spending so much money.
You are supposed to use it once in 2 weeks after shaving the area. I used it as recommended on few areas (where ever it worked) for a few weeks. The hair growth did slow down but did not disappear. I feel very disappointed every time when I see this device. I also continue to shave my face (most of my face except chin).
Overall, I feel it’s a complete waste of money for me as it didn’t work on my skin tone. I really had expectations on it and thought that it would solve my problems but no, this is no solution to me.
