“I’m going on a diet.”
How many times have you heard a friend say this to you? How many times have you made the vow yourself?
Diets are a fact of life for many of us – a frustrating, exhausting fact of life.
The sad truth is that, as exciting as they sound, and as much as they make us believe they’re going to work, most diets don’t work.
In fact, research has shown that most people who go on a diet invariably end up re-gaining all the weight they lost. However, we get it – you really want to get in shape so that you look and feel better. And the good news is that some diets do work.

10 Amazing diets that work best
The 2 Week Diet
Got a holiday coming up soon and need to lose weight really fast? Then you need The 2 Week Diet in your life.
If you do this one right, you could lose as much as 16 pounds in 2 weeks.
And if you don’t quite lose that amount, you should be able to shift at least 8 pounds.
It all starts with a low carb plan before switching to a low calorie plan. Exercises are thrown into the mix too, and you will need to work hard. After all, you’re aiming to lose 16 pounds in just 2 weeks!
Once the 2 weeks are up, you can add more calories to your diet (although not as many as you were eating previously) or you can continue with the diet for another 2 weeks.
And although losing 16 pounds in 2 weeks does sound like a lot of hard work, the fact that the diet is so clearly spelled out makes it that bit easier.
As a bonus, it even lets you eat steak!
The Keto Diet
If you’ve taken any sort of interest in diets over the past few years, you’ll have heard all about the keto diet. It’s now super popular and it’s based on a low carb diet.
That said, it’s not as focused on protein as many other diets. Instead, it’s focused on fats.
The intention of the keto diet is to put you body into what’s called a state of ketosis. This is when your body starts to burn fat for energy – as opposed to carbs.
As a result, you won’t be eating many carbs if you adopt the keto diet – just 20g per day at the most, in fact!
So how come people like it so much? Well, the moderate protein levels and high fat levels give dieters such a fab boost in energy that it makes them feel pretty good.
It’s an effective diet too that works straight away. If you’re consuming just 20g of carbs per day, you will instantly lose weight.
The biggest problem is that people often complain of feeling bored with the diet. It’s pretty restrictive and you’ll soon find that many of your fav foods are banned, such as pasta, pizzas and bread.
The Low Carb Diet
Most people get through around 300g of carbs a week, which is quite a lot. If you’re looking to address this, you can take a look at the low carb diet.
The low carb diet is pretty self explanatory, and it cuts your daily intake of carbs down from 300g to 150g.
Or even just 50g if you’re feeling hardcore about this.
Instead of carbs, the low carb diet puts you on a diet of veggies and protein, with the result being that you shed some serious poundage.
Moreover, the low carb diet also allows for a bigger intake of diet, which means that you still feel nice and satisfied.
Over the short term, you will lose weight, and you will also drop pounds over the long term because it’s a diet that works.
And if you think that counting carbs sounds tricky (which you will have to do), it gets easier and you’ll soon get to grips with it.
The low carb diet should also be low cost, although you’ll probably find that you spend a bit extra on organic produce. It’s a diet that taste good too because you still get to eat your meat.
The Atkins Diet
Everyone has heard of the Atkins diet.
But wait a minute – isn’t the Atkins diet supposed to be a massive scam?
If you do it right and stick with it, the Atkins diet can actually prove to be super beneficial to anyone who’s looking to lose weight.
It’s a diet that reduces your intake of carbs while limiting your intake of protein and fat.
Carb intake is reduced to just 40g at most each day, which is actually an increase on the older, stricter version of the same diet that would only allow 20g of carbs per day.
It has to be said that this diet isn’t aimed at everyone. Rather, it’s aimed at those who want to lose less than 40 pounds.
That said, if you happen to weight more than that, you can still give it a go. In fact, Kim Kardashian used the Atkins diet to shed 70 pounds.
The Atkins diet doesn’t take too long to kick into gear, and you should start seeing results almost straight away. This is what makes it so popular. As time passes and you stick to the diet, you can slowly start to introduce more carbs into your diet. This is also what makes it so popular!
The problem is that many people find it hard to stick to the Atkins diet and lose their way. Moreover, if you choose to eat the Atkins food, directly from the site, your weekly grocery bill could be quite high.
On the plus side, not much will change in terms of what you eat, so you should still be able to enjoy those tasty meals you love.
The 21 Day Fix Diet
This one would probably sound better if it was the 2 Day Fix Diet – but you can’t have everything, can you?
It’s based on portion control and employs containers to make sure that you get the right amount of fats, protein and carbs in order to reach your weight loss goals.
It’s all centred around 6 colour-coded containers that you fill each day. Because you don’t go beyond these containers, you’re keeping your portions – and therefore your calories and your weight – under control.
There’s also a seventh container for shakes and smoothies.
The biggest container is the one for vegetables and fruits, while the oils and seeds container is super small.
If you hate counting calories, this diet could be absolutely perfect for you. The problem is that lots of people find it hard to stick to it because of the containers. It can get a bit annoying having to use them all the time! Moreover, some people find them confusing.
The actual diet itself shouldn’t cost you too much money, but you’ll also need to do some exercising and this might mean that you pay for a gym membership.
Weight Watchers
Weight Watchers have a new diet out. It’s called Beyond the Scale. How good is it?
Beyond the Scale sounds like a dream at first because it pretty much lets you eat what you want.
However, it also encourages you to make smarter choices so that you go for a low calorie option more often.
As per with Weight Watchers, there are group meetings to help you stay on track.
The ultimate aim is that you feel good about eating – and not ashamed – and that you feel good about you.
It takes a while to kick in, however, because it’s not easy to make the smart food choices straight off the bat. So you will need some patience and perseverance if you’re to make this work.
Over the long time, however, people do lose a reasonable amount of weight. It’s a pretty easy diet to follow once you’re up and running, and instead of counting calories you count points. It’ a tad tiresome but it’s not exactly hard.
Indeed, the biggest hurdle is the price. Cost of membership is a bit on the high side, but you can always just sign up for the short term membership often, memorise what you need to do and then go it alone.
Of course, if you decide to do this you won’t have access to the support groups.
The Paleo Diet
Like the keto diet, the paleo diet is one you simply must have heard of if you’ve been reading up on diets over the last few years.
In a nutshell, the paleo diet suggests that if we eat like the cavemen did, we will lose weight and be healthier than we ever have been! It’s also been referred to as the Stone-Age diet, but does eating zero coffee, potatoes, dairy and very few fruits actually work?
Paleo diet advocate claim that our digestive system hasn’t actually changed all that much since the caveman era. As a result – so the theory goes – the reason so many people are overweight these days is because they’ve strayed from the paleo blueprint.
The paleo diet works initially, with many people happy to go all cave man. However, the novelty often wears off pretty fast and most people find it hard to give up so many of their cherished foods in the long term.
The Mediterranean Diet
There’s no doubt that the Mediterranean diet is one of the tastiest diets you can adopt. Fresh veggies fried in olive oil, fish, red wine and hummus – what’s not to like?!
Of course, this sort of diet is also on the pricey side so you need to have a decent budget. That said, you don’t need to go too crazy on the vino!
Olive oil is a key part of the Mediterranean diet, and you’ll be using it a lot. It that sounds good to you, this diet could work. However, you need to figure out your portions and count your calories yourself, as there’s no help on this front.
The 5:2 Diet
The 5:2 diet is based around the concept of intermittent fasting, whereby you eat a meal and then don’t eat anything at all for several hours.
With the 5:2 diet, you limit your calorie intake to just 500 for 2 non-consecutive days of the week.
For many, it’s a simple and effective way of cutting calories.
It works if you don’t over-indulge once the fasting period is over, but many people struggle to keep going over the long term.
Moreover, not everyone will find it easy to reduce their calorie intake to just 500 twice a week.
It’s cost effective, though, and when you’re not fasting you can pretty much eat what you want, which means you still get to eat your fav meals.
Does it satisfy you? Not on those 2 days when you’re fasting each week, but you’ll be totally fine for the rest of the week.
The Dukan Diet
If you’ve never heard of the Dukan diet, that’s probably because it’s brand new.
It has 4 stages. The first stage lasts 10 days and includes lots of oat brand and protein.
The second stage lasts for several months and is known as the Cruise phase. During this, you consume lots oat brand and vegetables.
The third stage is known as Consolidation and lasts for five days for each pound lost. During this stage, you eat few carbs and lots of protein.
The last stage keeps going until you quit the diet. For this one, you revert back to the first stage rules for one day per week.
The Dukan diet can definitely work over the short term but, due to a restricted selection, many dieters are known to become bored and its long term effects are dubious.
