Why does dry hair happen?
There are many different reasons why you may be suffering from the dreaded dry hair. Most commonly is genetics. Our hair is made that way because it’s in our blood and there is little that can be done about it. However, learning how to deal with dry hair that you were born with can give you some great tools for managing your dry hair each day.
If you find that your hair is dryer than usual, consider the weather! Colder seasons not only draw moisture out of the air, but the cold weather can draw it out of your hair as well. One tip to help you keep the dry hair at bay during the winter months is to give yourself a break when it comes to heat styling. Heat styling pulls out that precious moisture that your hair needs to be silky smooth and when used in the winter time, you have two forces working against your at once.
Another common reason why you may have dry hair is because of over-styling or consistent dying. While dying your hair is a fun way to express yourself, the more you do it the more damaged your hair will get. This is because most dyes and packed full of alcohol and parabens that strip your hair of their natural oils while can leave your strands dull and dry. The same can be said for overuse of treatments. Too many heavy hair treatments can cause build up in your hair overtime which can cause it to dry out. That is why it is often times to important to use box treatments sparingly and to always make sure to rinse them out completely.
Whether you were born into a family of dry hair or brought it on yourself with too many box dye jobs; there is hope for you yet. The secret is to introduce healthy proteins back into your thirsty hair which will help to re-build your locks from the roots down. Here are some of the best tips and treatments….
Home remedies for dry hair that will get you back on your way to hair heaven:
Hot Oil Treatment
Hot oil treatments are a great way to revitalize your scalp while also building up proteins in your hair which will strengthen them over time. While you can buy pricy box oil treatments at any beauty supply store, it is much easier, and better, to make your own right at home. Our favorite oil to use is coconut oil. This is also a great option for you if you have dyed hair because coconut oil never pulls dyes out! This treatment is simple and all you need is:
- 2 Tbs organic coconut oil
- Shower cap
- Clean towel
Start by melting your coconut oil. Coconut oil works best when it is not put in the microwave, so melt it using the double boiler method. Next, get your hair good and hot. Run your hair under a hot shower or faucet until damp, try not to get your hair soaking wet. Once your hair is hot, the follicles will open up allowing the oil to penetrate deeper for softer results. Spread the melted oil evenly through your hair focusing on the ends; try to avoid putting the oil directly on your roots. Pile your hair on top of your hair and cover with a shower cap or towel to help trap the heat in. Depending on how dry your hair is, you can leave the treatment in up to a whole day. Make sure to rinse well! We like to do this treatment once a month.
Purifying Treatment
Sometimes getting silky hair is as simple as removing product build up that can be hidden deep in your scalp. If you find that you use a lot of styling products and leave in conditioners, chances are that the build-up is what is causing your hair to dry out and frizz with each touch. Luckily for you, removing this product build up is really quite simple. This is what you’ll need:
- 2 Tbs Baking soda
- ½ Cup of water
Combine the two ingredients until the mixture is smooth enough to spread. Next, apply the mixture to damp hair making sure to use your fingers to work it into your scalp. Throw your hair up in a top knot and wait 20 minutes before rinsing your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Follow up with a deep conditioning treatment for best results. Baking soda is a great way to gently remove dirt and impurities that can be left over in your hair.
Olive Oil Pack
We’re sure by now you’ve heard the story about your mother using mayonnaise to keep their luscious locks in check. While you may laugh, this treatment works wonders on your hair! This is what you will need for the updated version of this classic treatment:

- ½ Cup Mayo
Start by placing your mayo into a bowl and then slowly drizzle in olive oil while whisking the mixture. You should be left with mayo that is a little bit runny. There is no delicate way to do this, you just have to get in there with your hands and work the pack through your hair focusing on your dry and thirsty ends. This treatment can be left in for a couple hours before rinsing. Mayonnaise is full of fats and proteins as well as amino acids that help damaged frizzy hair become stronger and softer.
Egg White Treatment
Nothing can wake up your mornings better than a fluffy egg white omelet. But, did you know that the same eggs you use to slay your breakfast can also give your thirsty locks some TLC. Here is all you will need to get your locks back to their luscious beginnings:

- 1 Tbs Vegetable oil
Start by separating the yolks from the eggs and set aside for a tasty dish. Next, slowly add in some oil to the egg whites while whisking. You want to mix it enough to incorporate the eggs but not too much that you make a meringue. Apply the mixture liberally to dampened hair and let sit for up to an hour. The proteins will help to rebuild you dry hair while the oil will leave it silky.
