“When you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine!”
There have been and continue to be times in my life when it would be really easy to feel down about how things are going, to beat myself about mistakes, to feel shame because of things and even worse, those times when I have been mean to others or blamed others for things that I may have caused, which then in turn causes more shame and guilt.
I don’t know about you but I feel like I am getting too old to want to hold on to things that are not positive and can actually hold me back. I work really hard on focusing on the positive in any situation, rather than the negative. Even though I am working on it doesn’t mean that I’m not going to cycle through any of these reactions or feelings, but I am definitely more aware.
I love this quote by President Gordon B Hinkley “Don’t be gloomy. Do not dwell on unkind things. Stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight. Even if you are not happy, put a smile on your face. ‘Accentuate the positive’ Look a little deeper for the good, Go forward in life with a twinkle in your eye and a smile on your race, with great and strong purpose in your heart. Love life.” It really spoke to me…and I think it is relevant if you are religious, or not, it really is about loving your life and find the joy in your journey (whatever that may be).
As you know I am traveling with my family this week (yes, again!)…and as usual there have been times when I have felt very little patience, dealt with teenage testosterone to the point where I wonder what i was thinking when I had 4 kids (just kidding). But honestly, it has made me question my ability to be a good mum and to discipline and love at the same time. If you ever want to find out how patient you truly are, you travel with a group of 7 boys who range from age 17 to 10 and see how that patience holds up – LOL.
One thing I feel like I have been taught is that I do have more patience than I ever thought was possible, it’s OK if I screw up (and I do) and I don’t beat myself up for not being perfect – I just try to do it different next time!
I definitely have things that take my thoughts away from the feelings of frustration that having teenage boys bring, I enjoy a good book on the beach or by the pool, I like to make sure that I take care of my body and health by exercising (even on vacation) – even if that exercise is a low impact game of tennis with the boys, or a simple hike or walk.
For me making sure I feel good about myself and how I look can certainly impact how I react to others. Have you ever reacted negatively to a situation and taken something out on someone because you are not feeling great (tired, dehydrated, hungry or feeling overweight) only to regret how you treated someone after the fact. That is why I like to spend time shopping for clothes that make me feel good, spend time taking care of my body, my hair, my face etc., so I can feel great about myself. I am definitely a different, more relaxed and happy person when I feel good about myself. I don’t think that’s superficial, I think it’s a good thing to recognize what makes you feel good and spend time doing that…whatever it is.
I love unique things because they help me express my unique personality and show who I really am. What helps you show who you really are? What makes you feel good? Do you focus on those things? Just a little food for thought…
Whether you are on spring break this week or not, I hope you are having a great week…
