22 Tips and Home Remedies on How to Get Rid of Whiteheads on Face
It seems that everyone is on the magical quest for perfectly clear skin. You know what we’re talking about, the skin that needs a little more than just a moisturizer to get that “I woke up like this” look. Well, if you’re like 99% of the population you know that this is often times an unachievable goal. This doesn’t mean, however, that you can’t problem treat your skin. One common skin ailment that most people suffer from is the occasional pop up of the dreaded whitehead. Here are some ways to get rid of those pesky whiteheads, so that you can be one step closer to skin perfection.
Why do we get whiteheads?
Sometimes in order to treat a problem, it is good to know why the problem happens. With many people it is a completely hormonal problem that tends to get worse during that time of the month. However, sometimes whiteheads can be an indicator of other problems. The main reason why you may be seeing an increase in whiteheads is due to the current condition of your skin.
Whiteheads are the tiny volcanoes that pop up when the pore beneath them becomes clogged. Even if you find that you wash your face perfectly, you can still get whiteheads. So, what gives? Makeup and dirt are not the only things that can clog up pores. Excess sebum and oils living on the surface of the skin can find their way into pores as well. You get one clogged pore and, bam, its whitehead city. Here is what you should do next time whiteheads invade your skin.
Cleanse daily
Whether or not you have pesky whiteheads, you should still be implementing a daily skin routine. The base to any healthy skin routine is in the way you cleanse. Knowing how your skin behaves is the best way to find the right cleanser for you. If you have oily skin, you need a cleanser that will strip the unneeded oils and sebum from your face like gel cleansers. Ladies with dry and sensitive skin should stick with cream based cleansers. It is important that you not only cleanse your skin at the end of the day but in the morning as well. Our skin picks up tons of bacteria while we sleep, so make sure to give your skin a fresh start every morning.
Gentle is the way to go
Face scrubs are a great way to deep clean down into the pores and remove dead skin living on the surface. However, if you notice an increase in whiteheads, you should give the scrubs a rest. Try not to exfoliate your skin more than twice a week, as over-exfoliating can only aggravate the whiteheads, which will only further irritate your face. Also, make sure to only use gentle facial scrubs that are derived from natural products to help prevent clogging up your pores with synthetic waxes and additives.
Fingers off!
While it is tempting to give those pesky whiteheads a good squeeze, try to restrain yourself. Popping whiteheads is one sure way to give your face those dreaded dark spots and scars. If you find that you have a whitehead that is particularly painful, try a more gentle way to relieve the pressure. Take a clean washcloth and soak it in some hot water. Make sure that the cloth isn’t too hot before applying pressure ,because you don’t want to burn yourself. Gently press the cloth against the whitehead and hold until the cloth cools. The heat will open up the whitehead and can help it drain. Make sure to follow up by disinfecting this area of your face, so that the extracted bacteria won’t spread further.
Steamed up
If you find that whiteheads have invaded your face completely, try a facial steam! This is a great way to open up all of your pores, which can help you to cleanse even deeper. Before your morning cleanse, fill up your sink with some seriously hot water. Next, drape a towel over your head and hold your face over the steaming sink. Wait a minute or two and then cleanse your face as normal. This is a great way to not only help cleanse your pores, but it will also help other treatments like serum and moisturiser to enter your skin deeper.
Close up shop
If you are trying the steaming method before washing your face, make sure you follow up with a tight pore close. After cleansing your face, rinse it with ice cold water. This will shock your skin and tighten the pores back up. This way you can go about your day and even apply makeup without worrying about clogging up your now squeaky clean pores.
Apple Cider Vinegar
If you go to any DIY beauty queen’s house you will notice that there is always one staple that they have. This magical product is apple cider vinegar. However, not all vinegars are created equal. You need to make sure to find one that is all natural and has the “mother” in it. The mother is the unfiltered bacteria that live in vinegar. This may seem a little sci-fi but it is an amazing skin saver. Apple cider vinegar can be used in everything from facial masks to toning treatments. This special vinegar is a natural antibiotic and also is a natural skin softener.
Peel it
By now you have seen those black glue masks that everyone on the internet is trying. While these masks look painfully fun, they are not the best for your skin. They are way too harsh to use on whitehead prone skin, because it literally rips out all of the essential oils and nutrients that your skin needs to heal. Instead, opt for a gentler mask like this. Here is what you need:
- Natural cinnamon powder
- Lemon juice
- Yogurt
- Honey
Mix in 1 large teaspoon of cinnamon powder with 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of yogurt. Apply a generous layer of the mixture all over your face and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. After this time, simply wash it off. Cinnamon promotes blood flow in your face, honey has good antibacterial and rejuvenating properties, yogurt helps gently exfoliate, while the lemon will kill bacteria and brighten up your skin.
Light treatment
One well kept beauty secret among estheticians is the power of light therapy. Most facial spas and salons offer light treatments that will spot treat problems like acne and white heads. These cool, yet powerful lights penetrate deep in the skin to treat problems from the inside out. While a spa day is an extra expense that not everyone can afford, there are plenty of other options. Plenty of brands are now selling pocket size light spot treatments that are perfect for at home facials.
Know the right ingredients
There are a lot of over the counter spot treatments available. But, how do you know which one will work best for you? It’s all in the acne fighting compounds. There are two main chemical treatments that work for acne. However, what works for one person might not work for you. The most common treatment you will see is salicylic acid. This is a powerful acne fighting compound, however, sensitive skin suffers know that salicylic acid can be their worst enemy, because it dries out the skin too. If this applies to you, give benzoyl treatment a try. Benzoyl peroxide helps clear your skin of harmful bacteria, as well as excess oil. The most important thing to remember about any over the counter spot treatment is that less in more!
Keep it moisturized
One myth about treating whiteheads is that you need to dry out all of those little suckers. However, if you are only drying out whiteheads without properly treating your skin you will be doing more harm than good. While yes, you do need to dry out those whiteheads, you still need to keep your skin moisturized. Follow up all of your skin battling products with a lightweight moisturizer, otherwise dead and dry skin cells will only clog up your pores, which can make whiteheads worse.
Sun protection
At the center of healing skin problems is one common thread. This is sun protection. All of your work will be useless if you are not protecting your skin properly against the sun’s harmful rays. This is especially true if you are using harsher products in order to treat whiteheads. Your skin will already be fighting to maintain a well balanced and moisturized surface, which will only be elevated by the sun’s drying properties. So make sure to layer up on sunscreen. If you are worried about clogging your pores any further, try using a light moisturizer that is developed for sensitive skin and that also has a decent SPF rating.
Vitamin treatment
Vitamins can be a skin’s best friend, so make sure to not only treat your body with vitamins on the inside, but on the outside as well. While you can find vitamin skin treatments, you can also customize your own, right at home. Start with some vitamin E capsules. Simply poke a hole in the capsule using a safety pin and squeeze all the vitamin goodness and gently rub the oil into your skin and let sit overnight. This is great way to rejuvenate your skin, while you sleep. For extra measure, add some vitamin E oil into your daily moisturizer for extra skin healing. Just remember that less is more during the day, because vitamin E oil has a tacky texture, which might not sit well under makeup.
Witch hazel
Witch hazel has been recommended by almost every generation when it comes to treating whiteheads. The main reason why this trend doesn’t ever seem to go away is because it works, and it works well. Simply soak up a cotton ball with some witch hazel and use it to tone your face after cleansing at night. Let your face completely dry before adding on your serums and lotions. Witch hazel is a great way to naturally kill bacteria that is living in whiteheads, while it also working to not dry out your sensitive skin.
Treat the redness
Nothing can kill your makeup game faster than a bright red whitehead sitting right smack in the middle of your forehead. However, whiteheads are fairly easy to cover up once the redness goes away. So give your makeup a fair shot by first calming down inflammation. To safely calm down redness without disturbing your skin too much, grab a spoon and throw it in the freezer. Next, grab a cotton ball and add a few drops of tea tree oil. Gently press the cotton ball against the white head to help kill bacteria. Next grab your now ice cold spoon and press the round side directly on to your inflamed whitehead. You will notice that not only will the pimple appear smaller but most of the redness will disappear.
Skin tools
There are certain skin tools that can work wonders when it comes to clearing up skin. Most notably are whitehead remover tools. The most important thing to remember about using skin tools is that you need to be sure to fully disinfect not only the tools, but also the area you are working on as well. Most whitehead removes are made out of stainless steel, so all you will need to do to clean it is to use an alcohol wipe. After you clean and steam you face, gently press the looped end of the wand against the white head using light pressure. This is a great way to extract nasty bacteria and puss living deep in those pesky whiteheads. Be sure to completely clean your face again after you finish with extractions.
Micro needles
One trend that has caught fire in the beauty community is the use of micro needles on the face. These magical little tools look like tiny paint rollers that are covered in tiny little micro needles. After washing your face, gently “roll” the needles over your face in an upward motion making sure to use very light pressure. The idea is that the micro needles are small enough to prick tiny holes into your pores, which can allow products to penetrate your skin deeper. This means that your acne medications, skin serums and moisturizers will go deeper past the top layer of your skin, which can help the treatments you are using work better and faster. (We reccommend to consult a professional dermatologist before trying any drastic skin treatments).
Consider your hair!
One thing that isn’t talk about much when it comes to fighting whiteheads on the skin is your hair. Yes, even your hair can affect the way your skin acts. This is especially true if you have long hair that tends to fall in your face. While we do a great job during the day not to disturb our makeup and skin with our dirty little fingers, however we don’t always pay the same respect to our hair. No one can resist flipping that hair around, especially on good hair days. With fingers constantly rolling through our scalp, you can only image the kind of dirt and oil can builds up in the hair. Now imagine all that dirt and oil rubbing against your skin all day. While you should never have to sacrifice an amazing hair day, try to remind yourself to keep your hands off your skin and cleanse thoroughly in the evening.
Save you face for last
Having clear skin starts right in the shower. We all have our trusty shower routines, where we shave our legs, use the latest hair mask and enjoy a nice facial steam. However, when it comes to keeping whiteheads away, try changing up the order of your shower routine. Save washing of your face until the end of your shower. Shampoos and conditioners are full of silicone and other chemicals that can find their way into your pores which can cause whiteheads. So keep your skin clear and clean and wash your face after you finished everything else. For extra measure, follow up with a quick blast of cold water to ensure that you are tightening up those pores.
DIY spot treatment
If you are looking for a more natural way to spot treat whiteheads, look no further than your kitchen pantry. All you need for these amazing treatment is a little bit of organic honey and some cinnamon. Mix a spoonful of honey with a couple dashes of cinnamon and store in a small clean container. This way you have your treatment to go whenever you need it! Simply use your clean fingers to apply a small dot directly onto your irritated whiteheads and leave for about 15 minutes. Remove the treatment with a warm washcloth and watch the magic happen. The cinnamon will reduce swelling and redness, while the honey will kill bacteria living deep inside the whitehead.
Get your science on!
This next DIY whiteheads treatment will make you feel like that 10 year old kid again playing with science experiments in the kitchen. The base of this DIY experience is baking soda. While this magical ingredient is commonly used in baking, it has another amazing purpose. Baking soda can be used in scrubs, face washes and even spot treatments. The thing that makes baking soda so great for the skin is that it bubbles and fizzes, which can help to clean the skin even deeper. This is especially true when it comes to treating whiteheads on the surface of the skin. Wet the whiteheads with a touch of warm water and then pack on baking soda. Leave this spot treatment on for about 15 minutes, and then wash away.
The purge
There is one thing that is sure to scare any avid beauty addict – throwing out makeup. Beauty collections are a great way to see all of your years of hard work lined up in a row. However, some of your products may be doing your skin more harm than good. We know all that makeup expires and that expired makeup is bad for us, but why are we so scared to let it go? If this applies to you, it might be time to do the great big purge. All makeup comes with a suggested shelf life date at the bottom of the label. Most makeup is good for up to 12 months, but if you know you have the special bottle of foundation that you spent way too much money on a couple years ago, it’s time to start purging. Look at it as an excuse to hit up the beauty store for a little restocking.
Keep you tools clean
Our skin is only as clean as our makeup brushes. This can be a scary thought for those of us who haven’t given our makeup brushes a deep clean in months. Regularly cleaning your brushes will insure that you are not spreading dirt and bacteria around on your face. It isn’t only about the cleaning either! Make sure that you always leave your brushes to dry completely upside down. Wet brushes that are left sitting upright can store bacteria deep at the base of the bristles, which can only make skin problems like whiteheads worse.
Clean, clear and ready to rule the day!
You should never have to hide your beautiful face because of a few pesky whiteheads. While knowing how to treat whiteheads is the first step to clear skin, the problem can sometimes be buried much deeper than your skin. Once you know that you are are worthy of everything best with or without whiteheads, you can fight those whiteheads without missing a beat!
