Skin Tone: Light to Medium with warm undertones
Skin Type: Combination
Hi everyone,
I have recently tried to incorporate retinols in my skin care. Retinol is also known as Vitamin A and is really useful in preventing fine lines, wrinkles and contains anti-ageing properties. Today, I will be reviewing the Ordinary’s Retinol 1% in Squalane. So, let’s see how this product fared for me.
Price:
$6.70
Product Description:
Retinol 1% in Squalane a lightweight serum with a high concentration of retinol in a squalane base. This treatment visibly reduces the signs of ageing. It diminishes the look of wrinkles and fine lines, brightens dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and smooths and refines the skin’s texture.
Key Ingredients:
Retinol: a well-researched retinoid with powerful anti-aging benefits. Squalane: a plant-derived emollient ingredient that offers lightweight hydration.
How To Use:
Apply a small amount at night before oils, moisturizers, and creams. Do not use this serum with other products containing retinoids, such as retinoic acid. Retinoids can make your skin more sensitive to UV radiation. We recommend wearing sunscreen during the day. If irritation occurs, this product can be diluted to reduce its strength.
My Experience with The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane:
The Ordinary has a lot of versions of retinol in their skincare range. The Ordinary’s skincare has varies retinoid in their range:
- Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, No Irritation).
- Granactive Retinoid 5% in Squalane (High Strength, No to Low Irritation).
- Retinol 0.2% in Squalane (Low Strength, Moderate Irritation).
- Retinol 0.5% in Squalane (Moderate Strength, High Irritation).
- Retinol 1% in Squalane (High Strength, Very High Irritation)
The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane comes packaged in a black glass dropper bottle with a white cap and a white cardboard outer box containing all the details about the product. The black glass bottle helps the product from losing its potency due to photosensitivity. The packaging is similar and typical of all Ordinary products. The dropper is really good and dispenses the serum easily. Overall, the packaging is simple, basic and lightweight. The serum is not travel friendly since the bottle is made out of glass.
Now, let’s talk about Squalane. The squalane oil is produced using a hydrogenation processing. The hydrogenation process stabilizes squalane. Primarily, Squalane was obtained from shark’s liver. However, The Ordinary brand uses 100% plant-derived Squalane. Squalane oil is suitable for all skin types, from dry to sensitive to oily and acne-prone. It is also super hydrating and a powerful antioxidant.
Retinol is generally used to reduce the signs of ageing. It reduces fine lines, uneven skin tone, minimizes pores and other signs of ageing. Retinols help by regenerating healthy skin cells to make new cells. Retinols can regenerate new cells by speeding up cell renewal process by making surface cells die quickly so that they can be replaced with healthier-looking new cells. Retinol helps to prevent breakdown of collagen too.
The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane has an oily-watery consistency. It doesn’t have any fragrance to it. I apply this to my face and neck at night-time only. I try not to add on other acids with the retinol serum. I allow the retinol to sink in and follow it up with marula oil and moisturiser. I use this serum only twice a week. I haven’t faced any skin irritation or skin peeling or redness. However, people with sensitive skin should do a patch test before using this.
If you have very sensitive skin, I would recommend starting with 0.2% retinol in Squalane and then moving higher up so that your skin adjusts to retinol. Also, never forget a sunscreen with a good SPF while using a retinol. You don’t want to damage your new skin by exposing it to harsh sun rays. I am definitely seeing major improvement in the texture of my skin and this product has even-ed out my skin. Overall, I am really enjoying using the Ordinary 1% retinol in Squalane in my skincare routine.
Pros of The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane:
- Lightweight retinol serum with oily consistency.
- Stabilized form of retinol.
- Evens out skin and improves texture of skin.
- Reduces skin pigmentation.
- Doesn’t irritate skin or cause redness.
- People with sensitive skin should carry out patch test before using this retinol serum.

Cons of The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane:
- None.
