Hello ladies,
In today’s post, I want to talk about a skin issue which may be bothersome to few of you ladies out there. So, let’s get started!
What are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are small growths, or flaps of tissue, that stick out from the surface of the skin and are known as acrochordons. They could be the same color as the flesh or a little darker. They are typically 1 to 2 centimetres long, but they may grow larger. Normally, they do not cause any pain or discomfort, but if they are subjected to too much friction – because of any clothing item or jewellery – then a blood clot might form there which may result in pain.
Common Areas where Skin Tags are Located:
• Underarms and in armpits
• On the neck
• Eyelids and under the eye
• In and around the groin area
• Under the breast
Causes:
Aging
Our skin tends to lose its elasticity as we age. So aging can be a cause of your skin tags.
Friction
Your skin is prone to developing skin tags if there is too much friction or rubbing against a piece of clothing or jewellery.
Genetics
If any family member of yours has skin tags, you may have a higher risk factor of developing skin tags in your lifetime.
Obesity
People who are obese have more skin folds than usual, resulting in a higher intensity of rubbing which may lead to skin tags.
Pregnancy
Skin tags are also a common side effect of pregnancy. This may be due to pregnancy hormones and sudden weight gain.
Diabetes
If you suffer from diabetes then chances are you may develop skin tags eventually in your lifetime.
Tips and Tricks:
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has strong antiseptic properties and ability to kill fungal infections while soothing the skin at the same time. You just need to soak a small cotton swab in it and secure to the skin with a bandage. Remove after 15 minutes. Do this three times a day until the skin tag falls off on its own.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The acidity of apple cider vinegar breaks down the cells which cause the skin tag to shrink and fall off because its structure has been compromised. To use apple cider vinegar for skin tags, soak a cotton ball in vinegar. Rub it on the skin tag and leave it on your skin to dry, covered by a band-aid. Do this 2-3 times a day until the skin tag shrivels up and falls off.
Iodine
Iodine is a natural element that breaks down the skin cells and causes the tags to safely fall off. First of all, remember that you apply iodine only on the affected area and not on the healthy skin surrounding it. To be safe, carefully apply coconut oil to a one-half inch area around the skin tag to create a barrier. Then apply a couple of drops of iodine with a sterile cotton swab. Repeat twice each day until the skin tag falls off.
Garlic
Garlic has antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties so it may be really helpful to get rid of those tags. Simply crush one clove of garlic and soak it up with a cotton ball. Apply it at night to the skin tag and cover with a bandage. Wash it off in the morning to get rid of the smell.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil contains lauric acid which is a powerful anti-microbial, which kills viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi by dissolving their cellular walls. You can use this by rubbing it into your skin tags every night before bed. The tag would gradually reduce in size or might disappear within a few weeks.
Vitamin E
You can also use vitamin E on your skin tags because of its powerful antioxidant properties. Select high-quality vitamin E oil and apply it to the skin tag. Cover with a small piece of plastic wrap and secure with a bandage and leave it overnight. You may see great results within a couple of weeks of using this remedy.
Castor Oil and Baking Soda
A mixture of both these wonder ingredients might help you to remove those skin tags. To use them mix 2 parts castor oil with 1 part baking soda and rub it gently over the skin tag. Cover with a piece of plastic wrap, or banana or papaya peel (to make it more effective), and secure with a bandage. Leave on overnight and rinse off in the morning. Repeat every night until the skin tag falls off.
Note:
Remember, all these are home remedies. They may take weeks to show results. So you need to be really patient with them but they are all safe and proven to be effective on skin tags.
