Hey Gorgeous Gals,
Today, I have two more lipsticks for you from the Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo range. I’m hoping you would love the shades from today – they are quite different from the last set that I had reviewed (which was all n*des) – the much sought-after colours for the “holidays” season. Yes, I know we are in the New Year, the Holiday Season is technically over, but I have issues with letting go… Actually, these shades would work till mid Feb – 14th of Feb, to be precise!! 😉 Let’s find out about them, shall we?
Product Description:
A lip color with the intensity of a lipstick that’s infused with a blend of hydration for the appearance of softer, fuller lips.
What it does:
The silky, weightless formula blends modern color with luxurious hydration for a lustrous finish. It features a hydrating blend of shea butter, jojoba, mimosa, and sunflower seed to nourish dry lips and give a silky, soft finish. The precision tip allows for easy and precise application throughout the day without the need for sharpening.
It is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.
”This all-in-one hybrid formula is my go-to, everyday lip color. I can build as much—or as little—color as I like while leaving my lips soft, hydrated and perfectly polished.”—Carisa Janes, Hourglass Founder
Hourglass products are 100 percent cruelty-free.
Price:
US $32 / HKD 330 / SGD 48 for 2.5 gm.
My Experience with Hourglass Lip Stylo Girl Icon and Lover:
The lipstick comes packaged in the usual Hourglass brown cardboard packaging – very elegant. The lipstick itself has a chubby pencil-type of design while the dispense mechanism is regular twist up and not something you need to sharpen. The lipstick tube is again the typical Hourglass brown with gold detailing. It looks quite stunning and classy and the tube has a decent weight, which helps in driving home the whole luxe theme. If you had more than one of these, you wouldn’t be able to differentiate colours except for the sticker at the bottom. For once, the font size is big enough for you to be able to read without squinting.
The lipstick is shaped like a pencil – not like a traditional bullet. While it is still new – it is easy to apply. Being creamy, it isn’t likely to retain the shape. Later, how easy it will be to apply – especially around the outer corners of the lips. The way you can manage this for some extra time is that apply the lipstick to your lip outline with the pointed end of the lipstick, but fill in the rest of the lips with the side of the lipstick. This will ensure that the tip remains pointy for longer.
The one con – and, for me, a big one at that – is the fact that the lipstick doesn’t slide in fully once twisted down. Like the tip of a pencil, the tip of the lipstick stays exposed. And when I say “the tip” – it isn’t a bit – it’s a substantial amount. Yes, there is a cap to ensure hygiene, etc., but since the lipstick doesn’t twist fully down, you have to be extra cautious while removing the cap or re-capping it. One would thing that is no big deal, but in daily use, it is a pain to be constantly careful while handling it – what if you nick it while opening or closing the cap? And one of my lipsticks did come with the top portion totally nicked off because someone who did not know better tried opening the product. Thankfully, I was able to replace it, but what if you yourself end up doing this. This is extremely irritating.
Shade:
Icon: Described by the brand as a “blue red” color, Icon is literally iconic shade in the range. It is a deep, bold, cool-toned red. It is an absolutely stunning shade – very eye-catching, confident colour – without looking loud. I feel such reds are actually easier to carry off than medium, brighter reds which can sometimes end up looking too loud and in your face. This one has amazing pigmentation and performed quite like the shade “Innovator.” It covered my lips in one smooth glide. If you want to go for sheer coverage, you may not want intense colour but do want the hydration that the texture offers, you can just lightly dab it onto your lips – it will still cover any natural darkness of your lips. The lipstick has a creamy satin sheen. The texture has a comfortable glide – without having too much slip.
Lover: Described by the brand as a “Vibrant Red Orange” color. The shade name is befitting – it is a medium, bright orange with warm red undertones. It is the attention grabbing, “in-your-face” type of shade. This wouldn’t be an easy shade to carry off unless you are comfortable wearing reds. The shade is semi-opaque but easily buildable and has beautiful, almost glossy sheen. If you want to go for sheer coverage, you may not want intense colour but do want the hydration that the texture offers – you can just lightly dab it onto your lips. It is a little thinner in texture to the shade Icon and has a little more slip to it.
Texture: The texture is gorgeous, it’s smooth, buttery, creamy and yet, it doesn’t sink into the fine lines of the lips. It does not bunch up when you press your lips together. It’s absolutely stunning. The lipstick is hydrating and has this amazing polished lustrous finish. It has a blend of shea moisture, jojoba, mimosa and sunflower seed. It actually makes your lips look plumper and more attractive than they are. Being as smooth as it is, it can smudge around the lip line when eating. So, if you have lightly dabbed it on to your lips, you should be okay. However, if you have applied either of these shades in their full creamy glory, I think you really need to use a lip liner – especially considering the boldness and vividness of the shades. The texture is light-weight – you don’t forget that you have lipstick on but you don’t feel the weight of it either. The lipstick is definitely moisturizing – your lips are better off with them.
Lasting Power: Considering how emollient it is, it has decent wear time – about 4.5 – 5 hours – depending on what you eat/drink. The lipstick will transfer onto cups and spoons and straws, etc easily. And as it does so, it will start disappearing from your lips. The good thing is that it wears off evenly – it does not look patchy. Both shades do leave a slight stain.
Fragrance: There is a slight fragrance, which is not an additive. The fragrance comes from the plethora of seed oils in the product. Do ensure you check this when you buy a lipstick from this range as a couple of my shades had a more pronounced smell. This could be the result of slightly older stock. Do note, this line is fairly new, so it isn’t like the stock is very old. But, the seed oils can start turning depending on how/where these are stored.

Cons of Hourglass Lip Stylo Girl Icon and Lover:
- Packaging – lipsticks need to go into the tube! Period!
- The fragrance of the seed oils may get off putting over time.
- If built up during application, the lipstick may smudge outside the lip line while eating food. A lip liner would definitely help with these bold shades.
IMBB Rating:
Icon – 4.5/5
Lover – 4.25/5
These are some amazing reds. Between Icon, Lover and Innovator – pretty much all variations of red are covered. It is just about which tone and level of brightness are you comfortable with. I think my personal preference would be Innovator, Icon and Lover – in that order. While the lipstick works for all people, I feel it would be great for more mature women – like me – it is a hydrating formula, it makes your lips look plumper, does not sink into the fine lines, these shades can be applied like a sheer finish (for hydration) or built up to a deeper intensity. Again, such bold shades would definitely benefit from a lip liner.
Do I Recommend Hourglass Lip Stylo Girl Icon and Lover?
Yes, this is a lovely formula and both the shades perform very well. Is it a must-have lipstick? No!
