10 HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT COME TRUE
10 Helpful Tips On How To Make New Year’s Resolutions That Come True
Most of us fail when it comes to new year’s resolutions. Not long after promising to never eat cake ever again, we’re eating all the cake. But it’s okay because Beauty and Tips has got you covered with 10 helpful tips on how to make new year’s resolutions that come true.
According to research, almost half of America makes a new year’s resolution, but only 8% of us manage to make our resolutions stick. That’s kinda annoying when you really wanted to stick to yours, but then the question becomes: If we really wanted to make our resolution stick, wouldn’t we have tried harder? There’s a lot more to it than that. Making a resolution and sticking to it is hard. If you want to make yours come true in 2018 and make a success of this year, use these 10 helpful tips:
Pick One Powerful Resolution
The first thing you should do is make just one resolution. When we make more than one, it’s a lot harder to make any of them work. Narrow your focus. If you’ve never been good at sticking to resolutions, the last thing you should be doing is making two, three or even four ambitious ones. Planning out how to own a resolution and make it work takes time and effort, and working towards more than one can easily exhaust you, especially if you live a busy life. Pick your most powerful resolution and focus on it.
Pick A Resolution Before New Year’s Eve
Another common mistake people make is leaving it until the last minute to make a resolution. Picture it: It’s new years eve, and you’re standing on a balcony with your best friend. Both of you have had a few cocktails and are now making big plans for the year ahead. “This year I’m gonna move to America!” you declare feverishly into the night. “I’m gonna do, it I am.”
“I believe in you!”- screams your friend. Both of you are jubilant. In 2018, you’re going to move to America. A month later, you still haven’t made a start on planning how to get to America, and sadly you realise the dream was too big and it’s not going to happen, at least not this year.
When we leave our resolutions until the clock strikes twelve, we often make impulsive resolutions that excited us at that moment, but which are unrealistic. It’s a much better idea to rationally pick a resolution in early December and spend the month planning how you can achieve it in 2018. Once January swings around, you’re all set to get working on making it happen.
Don’t Revisit The Past
Made a resolution last year, didn’t keep it…but wanna renew it this year? We would suggest that you don’t bother. If you didn’t follow it through last time around, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to follow it through this time around. The reason is that your “Why” obviously wasn’t strong enough. If a resolution wasn’t exciting enough to see you achieve it last year, what makes you think this year will be any different?
Tell People
It probably makes a lot of sense to keep our resolutions to ourselves, especially if we have a really bad track record of failing to make good on them. So why are we recommending that you tell people about your resolutions? Well, ask yourself this: Do you really want to be that person who once again fails to make good on their resolutions? Do you want others to say “we knew you’d never stick to it”? None of us wants to be that person, which is why it’s so important that you put yourself out there once again and make yourself accountable to people. If, on the other hand, you choose to keep your resolutions to yourself, you have no one but yourself to be accountable to.
Picture the Future
Easiest way to keep going when it looks like we might not be able to see a resolution through to the end? Picture the future. Picture how you’ll look and feel if you keep going and achieve your resolution. Keep this fantastic vision with you. It will drive you on.
Be Specific
“I wanna lose weight!” Okay…but how much and by what date?
When we aren’t specific with our resolutions, we find it super hard to achieve them. A sentence like “I wanna lose weight!” is way too unspecific and gives you nothing concrete to aim for. When making your resolutions, be clear, specific and set deadlines.
Be Realistic
When making new year’s resolutions, many of us tend to get a bit too ambitious. “I wanna fly to Mars!” we declare. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but you get the picture. To give yourself a better chance of seeing through this year’s resolutions, try to stay grounded. Be realistic and pick a resolution that captures your imagination, but which you know is achievable.
Ignore The Haters
People will tell you that resolutions are dumb, that it’s stupid to have one and that you don’t need to worry if you fail to achieve yours. Ignore them. This is all about you and your goals.
Find Your Reason Why
Another common reason why someone might not achieve their resolution is because they don’t know what their Why is. In other words, why have you set this resolution? How do you want to feel if you make good on it? When we know what our higher purpose is, we are more driven to succeeding and seeing things through.
Reframe Your New Year’s Resolution
If you say “I need to quit smoking because it’s such a bad habit and I’m getting fat,” it just sounds so negative, and it’s hardly likely to inspire you to keep going. Instead, you need to reframe your resolution with a positive slant. For example, you could say: “I’m going to get healthier and fitter this year, and quitting smoking is going to be a key part of my new and improved lifestyle.”
Happy New Year!
