10 COMMANDMENTS OF PERFECT MAKEUP APPLICATION
10 Commandments of Perfect Makeup Application
Learning how to do makeup correctly is both an art and a science. Because of that, some ladies find learning to wield the brushes, eyeshadow pallets, lipsticks, and mascara wands not only difficult, but confusing, as well. It doesn’t have to be! There are plenty of beauty tips and tricks that even those who are new to using makeup can put into use, so that their next look is not only fierce, but flawless. All it takes is following these ten basic rules, and you’ll be turning heads for all to see!
Always Clean Your Brushes
This is something that you’re going to have to be proactive about, but it more than pays off in the long run. Having dirty makeup brushes is never a good thing, and will normally result in streaky or otherwise flawed makeup. For some, you could even risk acne or other problems that will be very noticeable. To keep that from happening, clean your brushes with a mixture of baby shampoo (or any other very mild soap) and warm water. Make sure that you scrub enough to get any grime out of the bristles!
Don’t Forget to Blend
This is something that almost every person who wears makeup has done at least once: Forgetting to blend. Because of the nature of makeup, blending is almost always necessary after applying cosmetics of nearly any kind. So, before you head out, do a quick once over of your face. Are you wearing blush or bronzer? Check to see if it’s caked in one spot. Next, check the area around your face, to be sure that the foundation that you used isn’t forming a solid line there.
Draw Focus on One Feature
For those who are worried about doing a bit too much (especially if they weren’t really a makeup kind of person before), this is an excellent rule to follow. If you’re wanting to pull off a strong, eye-catching style, but also don’t want to look too overdone, then focusing on one feature at a time is a great way to pull it off. Want to rock some wild eyeshadow? Then go neutral on your lips and cheeks. Have a big, pouty, red smile? Go basic everywhere else.
Fight Oily Skin
Oily skin is a problem that most people face; there’s guaranteed to be a particularly troublesome spot on ninety-nine percent of people. Unfortunately, oil and a killer makeup job don’t exactly go hand-in-hand. So it’s important to fight back against it! Start before you even apply makeup, by blotting the oil from your problem areas. (The T-zone, in particular.) After you’ve put on some makeup, dab a bit of translucent powder there, to hide the shine. And, if you find the oil becoming a problem later, dab with oil strips again.
Do Not Stop at the Face
Most people associate makeup with nothing but a person’s face. But, if you stop at just the face, you aren’t realizing the true potential that makeup has. So, instead, get creative! Spread your foundation down your neck and onto the area above your top, for even coverage. A bit of shimmer powder or bronzer just above your cleavage can give an amazing illusion of fullness. Just make sure you blend, as we mentioned above, or you might look less pretty and more like a makeup bomb went off.
Do Not Use Just One Shade of Eyeshadow
There’s a reason that eyeshadow normally comes in pallets, and not just in one individual color: They’re meant to be with other, similar colors to create the best looks. When you use just one eyeshadow, you’re probably making the area around your eyes look flat and stopping it from popping out as much as you’d like. Start with three shades: A light, a medium, and a dark color. The medium should go over your entire lid, the dark should go towards the corner and the crease, and the light should go just under the brow, for contrast.
Have Lush Eyelashes
Everyone wants beautiful, long, dark eyelashes. Unfortunately, for many, that means either buying false lashes or not having them at all. But there are ways that you can get the false look without having to deal with the glue. Start off by using a volumizing wand for your mascara. Then, dab the excess mascara off before applying, this will help stop clumps. What if they come out looking like spider lashes? Then use a lash brush to delicately and gently separate individual hairs without ruining your makeup.
Fill In Eyebrows Properly
Beautiful, bold, and dark eyebrows are a huge trend right now. But not everyone can boast such dark, thick eyebrows; some people just naturally have lighter, sparser brows than others. But you can fake it without looking like someone who took a Sharpie to their face! To start, choose an eyebrow pencil that isn’t too much darker than your natural brow color. Then, you need to fill it in. But don’t go at it like it’s a coloring book! Use small, hair-like strokes going against the grain of your brow. Then, use an eyebrow brush to smooth things down.
Avoid Having Tired Eyes
No one wants to look like a zombie, even if they didn’t get any sleep the night before. Thankfully, there are easy ways to disguise your exhausted eyes! Start by using concealer with a green ting (normally used for acne) in places where you have dark circles or redness. Then, use a bit of white eyeshadow in the corners of your eyes to make them seem wider and more awake. Lastly, to really make yourself look wide awake, make sure your eyeliner isn’t too smudgy or dark; it can play into the sleep-deprived look.
Create an Illusion Of Fuller Lips
Thin lips are one of the hardest features to disguise using makeup. However, you don’t have to swing for lip injections to get the pouty smile that everyone loves. Once again, having an array of different colors and types of makeup is very beneficial here. Start by applying a lip pencil to your entire lip; it will stop your lipstick from disappearing too quickly. Next, use a lip pencil just a bit darker to line the inner third of your bottom lip; this creates depth. Lastly, applying lip gloss just to the centers of your top and bottom lip, in a heart shape.
Makeup can be tricky. But, if you follow these ten commandments, you’ll find that even the boldest of styles can be done easily and beautifully.
Stay beautiful!
