The most important Fashion Tip of all time: …you have to be able to laugh at yourself
Sometimes a half-smile is the perfect smile!
“My theory is, if you are confident you can pull off anything – even if you have no clue what you’re doing!”
Thank goodness the weekend is finally here…
I am excited to be headed to Midway to spend time with a couple of my boys and Brandon. We haven’t been up there since spring and I am looking forward to just a little time to relax.
The T shirt and flat sandals in today’s post are some things I picked up when I was on my cruise in the port of Cozumel…I always manage to find something that I love wherever I go, and I would much rather buy some clothes or shoes than a souvenir We took the ferry to Playa Del Carmen and I already knew there was a Zara there, so of course I had to see what wonderful things they had. Zara is one of my favorite stores and because they are not in Utah I have to stick to either ordering using my Zara app or going into a store when I visit another city.
Ruffles have been a great addition to the Women’s fashion repertoire this year, but when you add ruffles to a bold color like this Kelly Green, it makes even more of a statement. The burnt Orange flats are feminine with the bow, especially since I feel like sometimes flats are not feminine (at least for me).
Make your Fashion Statement
As you can see, even when you’re wearing jeans and a T shirt with flats you can still make a statement! I have never been afraid to be bold and draw attention to myself, but I do know some people that prefer to stay in the background a little more. Whether you are bold like me, of prefer the background, I can tell you that no matter what, people are going to notice you. The key is to get them to notice you for a good reason. People look, it is human nature to be curious about those around us, so thinking that you don’t want to draw attention to yourself is not going to get you out of it unfortunately. Can I be honest with you, I love it when I see someone, no matter their size, that absolutely loves themselves and it shows because they walk with almost a swagger, and they wear funky clothes, color their hair bold colors or use bold makeup and lipstick.
In my opinion the most important accessory any person can have is confidence. I teach all of my kids that it’s OK to dress how they like – even if that means we are going to the grocery store with someone wearing the most bizarre mix of patterns, clashing colors and even mis matched socks. I think it’s important for people to learn, at a young age if possible, that they can show people who they really are. My youngest, Reiken, is still at the age where I have to tell him that a floral shirt doesn’t look great with plaid or something like that, but I always let him choose if he wears it. There are definitely some fashion rules and suggestions that can help us hone our styling skills, and then there are some people that can pretty much get away with anything because they are just that confident.
I believe that fashion and style are something that are always a work in progress – we sometimes get derailed by new trends that emerge and our want to fit in. Fashion is something that you see in the stores and onTV, but style, that is something that comes from within you. Your style is just that – there are really no rules…if it looks great, then it’s not wrong!
Transform a fashion into YOUR style, here are just a few tips:
- Don’t just wear something because it’s “in fashion”
- Know colors and styles that suit your body type, coloring and confidence level
- Don’t be afraid to experiment, but always do a “double take” in the mirror before you leave the house
- Recognize that just because someone else is wearing something doesn’t mean it will work for you
- Don’t buy something just because it comes in your size – there are still some things that I would NEVER be caught dead wearing because they are not appropriate or flattering for me
One final point, remember that what you are comfortable with is most important. If you have ever watched shows like “What not to Wear” and others like it, then you know that they have you throw all your clothes away and start over (with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 pieces). I don’t think something like that is necessary – in fact, my guess is that more often than not after someone has been “styled” so drastically they tend to revert back to their old ways because that is where they are most comfortable. Now that doesn’t mean that changing your style and incorporating new fashions into your wardrobe isn’t going to be out of your comfort zone for some of you. But, what it does mean is that if it so far out of your fashion comfort zone that you can’t really hold your head up as you walk, or you are conscious all the time of what other people are thinking or saying about you, or every time you glance in the mirror you want to run home and change, you probably ought to take things a little bit slower.
Fashion is something that is constantly changing, so don’t worry if you see some things that you know you will never wear – I am still amazed, like I said in my post yesterday, that some trends and fashions even come back into style…they were always ugly and a Fashion “faux pas!”
After all, Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak!
