10 LONG HAIR TIPS AND SECRETS EVERY GIRL SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
10 Long Hair Tips And Secrets Every Girl Should Know About
Long hair looks fabulous, but as anyone who has ever grown their hair long will know, it can be very high maintenance. However long your hair is, it will need to be cared for if you are going to keep your hair looking beautiful, but long hair does bring some of its own unique problems. So, if you want to keep your flowing long locks in perfect condition, read these ten long hair tips that every girl who loves long hair should know about.
1. Keep it trimmed
Hair grows at an average rate of about 1.25 cm every month, so that means that, if you have very long hair, the ends of your hair have been around for some time and will have been styled, coloured and treated with products many, many times, so they are quite likely to develop split ends. If you have your hair trimmed every other month, it will keep the split ends away, but it won’t reduce the overall length of your hair.
2. How to brush long hair?
It is important to brush long hair regularly, not just to keep it looking neat, but also because brushing spreads natural oils along the full length of the hair, which will help to keep the hair in good condition. Divide your hair into sections and use a wide paddle brush gently, in small strokes, along the length of your hair. It is even more important to be gentle when brushing long hair, because the ends of long hair will be more susceptible to damage.
3. Long hair tips – shampooing
To make shampooing your long hair a little bit easier, thoroughly dampen your hair first and then use just enough shampoo to get a good lather. Avoid using too much shampoo, or it will take forever to rinse it out. Then gently massage your scalp to remove dirt and excess oil and thoroughly rinse your hair before you use conditioner. You will probably only need to shampoo your hair every two or three days. Any more than that and you will dry your hair out.
4. Conditioning tips for long hair
Make it a rule that you always condition your hair after every shampoo. Even the gentlest of shampoos takes some moisture out of your hair, so use a conditioner designed for your hair type and that will put the moisture back and keep your hair soft and bouncy. Remember that conditioner should not be used on the roots, or it will make your hair look oily, and condition all the way down the full length of your hair, right to the tips, where it will need it the most.
5. Use hair masks
Hair masks are the best way to treat your hair to a deep down condition. They not only hydrate your hair, they also feed it with vital nutrients that will keep your hair healthy. There are many different types of store-bought hair masks that will soften hair and bring out the shine, or you can make your own with natural ingredients, such as mashed banana and honey, or avocado and olive oil.
6. Massage your scalp
Massaging your scalp promotes a good blood supply to the follicles and that will help keep your hair in good condition. You can massage your scalp when you are shampooing or you could use a scalp serum, which usually contain things like avocado oil and coconut oil. Remember; keeping your scalp healthy is just as important as caring for your hair.
7. Sleep on a silk pillow
One of the biggest headaches with long hair is waking up to the tangles and a head full of frizz. You can avoid both of these problems if you put your long hair up a loose bun at night and you sleep on silk or satin pillows. Your hair won’t tangle up so much on silk or satin pillows and it will also help avoid any breakage in the night too.
8. Use a hot oil treatment
Massaging warm oil into your hair and scalp will condition your hair and look after the health of your scalp. You can choose the type of oil based on your own particular needs. If you have dandruff, coconut oil would be the best choice, olive oil is great for deep conditioning, avocado oil will moisturise hair and make it shine, and almond oil does a wonderful job of smoothing hair.
9. Lay off the hot tools
You have probably heard this before, but heated tools are really bad for your hair. If you do use heated tools at all, use a heat protecting product and keep the heat down low. Even better, curl your hair by leaving rollers in overnight, or braid your wet hair before you go to bed to get waves.
10. Be gentle with your hair
Being gentle with hair is the number one tip that applies to all types of hair, not just long hair. Don’t tug out tangles, don’t style your hair when it is wet, and don’t rigorously rub hair dry with a towel, pat it dry with T-shirt.
