10 TIPS FOR FALLING ASLEEP EASIER
How to fall asleep easier?
Lack of sleep is a drag. Let’s take a look at 10 tips for falling asleep easier.
We know how it is. We’ve been there. The 6am alarm is looming, and yet with just three hours to go you still haven’t fallen asleep. You’re getting frustrated, as you toss and turn under the covers, desperate to fall asleep soon so that you’re not totally exhausted tomorrow.
6am comes, and you’re woken from your slumber by your clock. You can’t remember how much sleep you got, but you know it wasn’t enough. You pour yourself a second cup of coffee by 7am, knowing it will perk you up somewhat, but also knowing full well that it isn’t enough. You needed more sleep.
The whole day that follows is exhausting. You’re lethargic and can’t think straight. Nothing goes right and you fall behind at work. You’ve no motivation to hit the gym once the day is over, and neither do you want to go out and see friends. You just want one thing – more sleep!
Falling asleep is a cinch for some of us (especially dads!). For the rest of us, it’s one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do. And it seems as though the harder you try, the harder is it to snooze. To make sure you’re feeling more refreshed than ever after the best night’s sleep, let’s take a look at 10 tips for falling asleep easier.
Block Out External, Annoying Noises
You might not even realise it, but there could be some annoying external noises that are bugging your subconscious so much that it’s impossible to sleep.
How do you get rid of these noise? It’s hard, but the best thing to do is listen to some sweet, soothing music through a soft, fleece-lined pair of headphones.
This might sound counterproductive, but it isn’t. Music can relax you, and prepare your mind and body sleep.
And soothing melodies are much kinder on your ears than car horns, drunks and noisy neighbours!
Stop Napping
At Beauty & Tips we’re big promoters of the cat nap. But if you’re struggling to sleep at night and you’re a serial cat napper, it might be time to stop.
Hide Your Phone/Clock
Okay, you should put your phone away to avoid distractions. But you also need to hide it so that you don’t keep checking the time.
Checking the time can make it really hard to sleep, because the more you check it, the more frustrated you get when time is really ticking on.
And doesn’t time seem to go so much faster when you can’t sleep? It only felt like ten minutes ago when it was 4am … but it’s already 5.30!!
Enjoy A Light Evening Meal
Do you often eat a big meal 2-3 hours before bed? It could be that which is keeping you up at night. Either eat earlier or eat lighter.
Plan The Next Day
One of the things that can keep us up at night is thinking about how much stuff we’ve got to do the next day.
You know you’ve got a LOT to do, but you don’t know in what order you’re going to do it in. As you slip under the sheets at night, you’re tormented by thoughts of tomorrow.
“I’ve got so much to do … I just don’t know how I’m going to fit it all in.”
Sound familiar?
The best thing to do in this situation is plan tomorrow today. Before bed, write down a schedule for tomorrow so that you know exactly what needs doing and when you should do it.
In this way, you can go to bed with a much sounder peace of mind.
Turn Off All Distractions 30 Minutes Before Bed
By all distractions, we literally mean all distractions. Send your last work-related email 30 minutes before bed, close any online dating sites and get off Facebook. If you don’t discipline yourself like this, you could end up going to bed with too much on your mind.
“What if he’s sent me a new message? I should quickly check.”
This sort of thinking can keep you up all night!
Take Care Of All Your Chores
Got any outstanding chores that you’ve decided to put off until tomorrow? Don’t put them off. Take care of anything that can be done today right now. If you don’t, you’ll find yourself going to bed stressing about the backlog of stuff you still have to do tomorrow.
When the sheer amount of stuff we need to do starts to pile up, it can cause worry and consternation. And this can affect your sleep. Wouldn’t you much rather go to bed knowing that tomorrow isn’t going to be anywhere near as stressful as it could have been?
And Take Of All Your Clothes!
Clothes can make us feel irritable and too hot. Try taking them off and sleeping naked.
Cool Off
When temperatures soar, we find it hard to sleep. We’re sure you know this. Think back to a time when you tried to sleep during a heat wave. It was difficult, right? You were hot and sticky, and had to kick the sheets off to cool down. Your sleep was peppered by hot flashes and sweats. It was horrible!
Make sure that your room is on the cooler side of room temperature. Maybe open a window ever so slightly, or turn on a gently humming fan.
You could also jump into a cool shower before getting into bed, as this will help to bring your body temperature down, which will in turn tell your body that it’s time to sleep!
Try Yoga
Finally, if all else fails, yoga usually does the trick. Yoga relaxes your body and mind – perfect if you need to fall asleep easier.
