10 THINGS TO GIVE UP TO BE HAPPY
10 Things To Give Up To Be Happy
Happiness is not always about the things you acquire. A lot of the time, your happiness hinges on the things you’re able to give up. In this article, we’re going to take a look at the 10 things you need to give up in order to be happy.
If you ask people what they want out of life more than anything else, it’s likely that you’ll get the same three answers:
1) Health
2) Financial Security
3) Happiness
The order will change, but happiness will usually be there. Why? Because happiness is amazing!
Unfortunately, far too many of us are guilty of over-complicating our lives to the extent that we just don’t know how to be happy. We constantly chase the wrong goals and do the wrong things.
Being happy shouldn’t be so hard. Think back to a time when you were at your happiest. Maybe it was a spring morning when everything went right. Wouldn’t it be amazing if every day could be like that?
The answer is that every single day of your life could be like that morning – if you learn to let go.
When George Michael wrote the song Freedom after the Berlin wall came down, he wrote about how freedom is not just freedom to do – it’s also freedom from things. It’s the same with happiness. To be happy you have to be prepared to give some things up. Let’s take a look at 10 things you need to surrender to be happy.
Resistance To Change
Change seems to be a dirty word in society. If you give up meat and alcohol, your friends and colleagues might mock you for changing.
But change is important. We all need to grow if we’re to find ourselves. Life would be very boring and unfulfilling if we all stayed exactly as we are.
Experiment with change. You might find that the best version of yourself hasn’t been tried out yet.
Your Need For Control
It might sound harsh, but some people are natural-born controllers. They have to be in control of everything. If they’re not, they find it really hard to settle down and focus.
It’s the reason why some of us hold back from doing stuff that could actually make us happy. We don’t take spontaneous road trips, because we have no control. We don’t like last minute changes of plans because it means we’ve lost control.
It means that we miss out on so much adventure.
Predictability is good sometimes. But unpredictability is exciting. It’s life in the raw. When you surrender control now and then, amazing things can happen. Instead of following some sort of predestined plan and living your life according to a very strict, very mundane routine, cast your fate to the wind and see what happens. You might meet some amazing people and chance upon some amazing, unforeseen encounters.
Jealousy
There are people who have more money than you, a bigger house, a better car and so on.
There will always be people like this. But why waste your time being jealous of them? It will only do you more harm than good.
Stop comparing yourself to others. Just keep doing your thing, and stay focused on your own goals. Also, be grateful for all the great things you already have in life.
Your Need To Always Be Right
Some of us really enjoy being right. It feeds our ego, and makes us feel good. It also backs up our idea that we’re smart people who know what we’re doing.
But guess what? You don’t always need to be right.
Such a revelation, huh?!
But it’s true. Being right all the time can be a real stumbling block to personal happiness. We get incensed when other people don’t agree with us, and work stupidly hard trying to make them agree.
But what does it really matter? Wouldn’t you find more peace walking away and letting someone else be right for once?
The Idea That Work Validates You
For a lot of people, work is a big part of their lives. But sometimes, work can totally dominate our lives to the point where we no longer have the time to focus on the things that really matter.
Turn down that next offer of overtime. If you own a business, turn down that next contract. Take a break. Reconnect with people and your passions, and remind yourself that work isn’t the thing that defines you and your happiness.
Worry
This is a hard one to give up. But if you start to realise that worry is a waste of time and energy, you can start to be a lot happier.
Put your faith in the cosmos. What will be will be.
Criticism
Criticism stings. And when something stings, bad feelings arise. People get hurt.
Constructive criticism, of course, is positive. But if you constantly put people down (including yourself), you’re denying yourself so much happiness.
In a world of critics, you should rise above, stand tall and be an encourager instead. Stop focusing on what’s wrong and focus on what’s right.
Criticism just makes everyone feel bad. It’s not cool.
Blaming Others
Made a mistake? Now is the time to start accepting responsibility.
Once you stop blaming others, you realise that your destiny is in your own hands. This is really empowering.
Your Need To Be Liked
You’d think that to be happy, you need everyone to like you.
Not true.
Happiness must come from within, and not from outside. Everyone has haters. It’s a fact of life in 2017, where we are all connected. But you mustn’t rely on validation from other people.
You’ve got people who love you – your close friends and family. That should be enough. Forget the rest. If you let what other people think of you influence your mood, you’ll find it hard to be yourself.
The Past
The past has gone. It’s not coming back, and it doesn’t have to define you.
Stay happy!
